In a 2016 article entitled Effects of Magnesium Supplementation on Blood Pressure, Zhang et al. carried out a meta-analysis on studies of the effectiveness of magnesium supplements on blood pressure. In these studies, participants were randomly assigned to either the treatment group or the control group. Neither the experimenters nor the participants knew which group was which. Still, the treatment group received natural magnesium supplements, while the control group received similar tablets that did not contain magnesium.

The results showed that taking a 300mg per day magnesium supplement raised magnesium in the blood. An increased level of magnesium in the blood reduced diastolic (but not systolic) blood pressure. Although the authors were reasonably confident about this effect, one problem they identified in the studies they reviewed was that not all of them were of the same high standard.

It seemed as if the more well-designed studies, or the studies with a lower dropout rate of the participants, identified more significant effects of magnesium supplements on blood pressure. The less well-designed studies did not find that the magnesium had as much impact. However, the fact that different studies had different findings shows that more research is needed.

Surprisingly enough, even something as simple as increasing your dietary fiber intake can significantly impact blood pressure. Increasing your fiber can reduce blood pressure levels, cholesterol levels, and even the risk of cardiovascular disease.

A review and meta-analysis from 2018 showed that supplementation with viscous soluble fiber effectively lowered both systolic and diastolic blood pressure. The authors of this study searched medical research databases for studies that were conducted over no less than four weeks and assessed the effect of five specific types of fiber (β-glucan from barley and oats, konjac, psyllium, guar gum, and pectin).

They only included studies that took the form of randomized controlled trials (RCTs), such as Zhang et al.’s study described above. The authors concluded that viscous soluble fiber was effective in lowering both systolic and diastolic blood pressure. The authors suggested that fiber supplements could also reduce the risk of heart disease (since high blood pressure increases this risk).

Another meta-analysis of blood pressure studies, performed in 2005, was designed to estimate the effects of fiber supplements overall and their impact on specific population subgroups. Fiber supplementation was shown to reduce systolic and diastolic BP, especially in individuals with hypertension or individuals 40 years of age or older.

The authors noted that the typical intake of fiber in Western populations is way below the recommended levels. Vegetarians usually had less risk of developing high blood pressure – which might be because they get more fiber in their diets than non-vegetarians.

The effects of fiber supplementation were more significant in groups who were above 40 yo. Still, there were no significant differences between its impact on people of different sexes and different body weights.

Coenzyme Q10

It has been suggested that the supplement Coenzyme Q10 might help to lower blood pressure in hypertensive people. However, a 2016 article in the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews indicated that the small number of studies on this topic, and the small number of individuals who participated, casts doubt on whether or not this is the case.

A 2015 review of 16 trials assessing the effect of calcium supplementation on blood pressure showed that calcium was effective. The authors determined that increased calcium intake lowers both types of blood pressure slightly; with really high doses of calcium, this effect is more pronounced. The impact was more significant on the younger participants (ages ranged from 11 to 82).

These authors also noted that further research is required to determine whether the supplements work – but none of the participants reported any adverse effects from taking the supplements. In other words, the supplements might or might not be beneficial, but they are doubtful to do any harm.

Participants consumed either a fish oil supplement or a placebo during an 8-week study (published in The Journal of Nutrition). In their article in the journal Hypertension, Khalesi et al. systematically reviewed and analyzed human clinical trials claiming that probiotics had a beneficial effect on high blood pressure. Probiotic supplements containing more than one probiotic strain were even more beneficial than those with only a single type of probiotic.

However, this effect was only present when the probiotic supplementation continued for more than eight weeks. The beneficial effect was also not found when the daily dosage of probiotics was smaller than a certain amount. Overall, the beneficial effects of the probiotic supplements in the studies reviewed were not very large. Still, as the authors noted, even small decreases in people’s high blood pressure could significantly affect the population’s overall health.

These authors also qualified their findings by saying that, because only relatively small groups of people participated in the studies, there was still a need for more studies on larger groups.

L-arginine

The amino acid L-arginine is produced naturally in the body. It is also found in foods like nuts, beans, meat, and dairy products. Taking L-arginine supplements is not usually necessary, but if you happen to be one of those who does not have enough L-arginine in your system, taking a supplement could benefit you.

L-arginine may work better in conjunction with vitamins B6 and B12 – but it can have harmful effects when taken together with certain medications.
